Construction on Gauteng's most ambitious public transport project began in September 2006 and today the first phase of the project carried its first fare paying passengers. It was dark and chilly before 5 0'clock this morning as the first passengers began arriving at Sandton Station. Despite some problems with the ticket vending machines, there was a festive atmosphere as the large crowd got their "Gautrain Gold Cards" and made their way onto the train.

At 05h24, as scheduled, the first train pulled out of Sandton en-route to OR Tambo International Airport. Before reaching Marlboro Station the four-coach train had already reached 160 km/h, although there is no sensation that your are traveling at such high speed. After a brief stop at both Marlboro and Rhodesfield Stations, the first journey came to and end just 14 minutes after leaving Sandton.
